A Touch of Class

This project was created for the AATCC Concept 2 Consumer Student Design Competition, where the challenge is to create a new line of workwear that incorporates "timeless fashion" and sustainability. This line is being targeted towards female public high school teachers in the United States, specifically in North Carolina. The object of this line is to create clothing that is fashionable, functional, and sustainable in regards to the lifestyle of these women.

Teachers must look professional, yet dress with the ability to maintain functionality and mobility. Science teachers must dress appropriately for lab settings, and Health/PE teachers must dress appropriately for gym classes. One way I’m considering “timeless style” is through the use of transitional pieces that are considered “timeless” because of their versatility. The classic silhouettes allow for pieces that will last a longer amount of time yet remain in style. By using such “timeless” transitional pieces, teachers would be given the freedom to be ready for whatever the lesson plan calls for that day.

Teachers can not afford most of today’s sustainable options such as organic cotton, hemp, PVA, and more. By focusing on pieces that will last longer, these educators will not have a need to buy as many clothes. These pieces will also have the transitional ability to be used throughout the different seasons. In some garments, there will be a larger seam allowance to allow for possible weight gain/loss, without having to buy new clothing. Buying less clothing directly decreases the amount of waste contributed by these individuals, allowing them to become more affordably sustainable.
